By that reply, may I take it that you disagree with Richard Dawkins and Bart Ehrmann (they are higher up the education scale than us)? Which has done more for mankind science or religion?If you ever get Cancer, which I hope you don't, which would you plump for "naive scientism"/science based treatment or mythology? Also, why do priests seek medical treatment for life threatening illness? One would have thought they would rather be with their God ASAP. Richard Dawkins claimed that he knows priests that don't believe in God, but they need the job. Where do you get "naive scientism"? Science is fact based. Lastly, don't you think course work on "Surf Science" is meaningless. I am also led to believe that "Media Studies" is not always highly regarded, even by the press industry. If that is so, couldn't it be argued that, to some, the coursework is meaningless?

I think Dawkins makes some excellent points, but he has underestimated the psychological and social functionality of "religious beliesf" which have a dynamic logic of their own (like the weather) which is perniciously reactive to Dawkins' scientism. Also Dawkin's is analytically inconsistent because on the one hand he promotes materialism and deterministic evolution, yet on the other he claims that humans have the ability to override evolution. For those reasons I can label Dawkins as "naive" ...a label which can be applied to anybody who makes the quasi-religious error of thinking that science is about " abstract truth" rather than "functionality", and to one who has not recognized that the criteria for such functionality are ultimately social.
