The alternative is to leave them defenseless.

My main concern is bad guys in body armor. We need more than just teachers with handguns in holsters. Some assault rifles locked in a cabinet in the principal's office are probably also in order.

Bah..."locked in the principal's office" is a recipe for a slaughter by someone determined to slaughter. The person would be able to calculate the amount of time it would take to retrieve the locked defense weapons.

And I guess some serious armament also ought be available. I'll bet a tank...or a cannon...would cause some serious concerns to the bad guys.

@Frank Apisa,
Recoilless rifles, Frank (we called 'em 'bazookas' during the big War) would be ideal, I believe. Tanks are kind of bulky and not too easy to maneuver on a school campus, but them thar 'reckless rifles' are mighty portable.

You are absolutely right. I was going to recommend them myself, but -- silly me -- I figured it would be taken as a provocation as opposed to a serious argument. Next time I'll just listen to my instincts.

It doesn't matter how much armor the bad guys are wearing. They won't be wearing enough to defeat an anti-tank missile. Cool

Knew I could depend on you, Oralloy. How 'bout minefields on the school grounds? The kids, of course, would have been told where it's safe to cross the lawn, but the bad guys wouldn't know where the landmines are. Trip-wires during the school day. They could be removed at the end of the day so the night watchman doesn't set one off.

That would probably not work out well. But teachers (who volunteer, and are willing to accept added training) carrying pistols in holsters, and some military rifles and bazookas securely locked in the principal's office (also to be wielded by people who volunteer, and accept added training), would be advisable.

Oh, yeah, great! Let's get more armed people in there -- volunteers with quick-draw holsters and AP rounds in their .44 Magnums. Great idea! The more the merrier. I like the idea of volunteers just showing up and saying, "Say, gimme a gun. I wanna patrol the halls." Yeah, I'm sure that would make everyone so much safer. You're a gem, Oralloy.

Wait. Slow down here. A .44 magnum is a great gun to carry if you are in an area where you might suddenly need to defend yourself against a black bear (get a single action, because the grip shape of a double action revolver drives the recoil energy directly into your hand). But it is not terribly useful in fending off humans.

The idea of AP ammo in a handgun is a fallacy. AP ammo requires rifle velocities to function in any kind of AP role.

And what's this about volunteers just showing up??? I talked about teachers and staff who, after volunteering, would receive training and certification in the use of their weapons.

How about remote controlled machine guns in the hallways and smoke bombs and trap doors with spikes in the bottom ... hang on you could dig a moat around the schools and fill with acid... better still build 100 ft walls around them and send your kids to school by helicopter.... or you could pray to your gods Hee Hee Hee .

That's pretty silly. Just give the teachers and staff who volunteer, the training and equipment they need to do the job.

@oralloy,
Oraboy--if you were really experienced with firearms you would know that there are several rifles also chambered in 44 Mag. Moreover, the same 44 Mag ammunition when used in a longer rifle barrel behaves significantly different than when used in a pistol (double or single action). For instance my 44 Mag Model 94 has a muzzle velocity of 1800 fps vs 1200 fps for the same round from my Blackhawk using wadcutter bullets.

I am, of course, speaking of revolvers here as the 44 Mag recoil action semi-action pistols (Desert Eagle) have been demonstrated to be significantly outperformed by either the 9" inch Blackhawk or Silverhawk Revolvers.

@Lustig Andrei,
Good thread, Boss. That clown LaPierre is an idiot, who is playing to his constituency, and doesn't give a rat's ass about anyone else. His call for armed guards is just plain stupidity. Several years back, there was an abortion doctor who had gotten death threats, so he found a retired policeman who agreed to act as his body guard. A fat lot of good it did him. This rightwingnut religiouis clown walks up, shoots the body guard and then shoots the doctor. You put armed guards in schools, and any determined shooter whill just put a burst into their heads, and then go take out the children.

More guns is a typical brain-dead response from the lunatic fringe of the gun lobby.

A school district in NJ (Marborough) announced that after the Christmas break it will have an armed policeman at each of eight schools in the county. Since it is an upscale community, they can afford the expense, and it may be fine with the parents, since, in my opinion, wealthier families do have a habit of giving their kids what is needed to survive in modern society, from swimming lessons to private colleges. Why would a wealthy community want to find out too late that the NRA was correct, if at present the gun laws are fairly lax, in my opinion?

@Lustig Andrei,

Leave the kids and teachers unarmed and unprotected.

Put signs up and have the media inform everybody that
all schools are 'Gun Free Zones' for law abiding citizens.

Make damn sure that nobody in the school can defend themselves
or protect the children when evil decides to visit their school.

Well, stands to reason, right?

Uh...right?

Oh no. We should make sure there is a gun...or several guns...in every school in America!!!

Then there will be fewer shootings???

Are you just joking here?

Tell me this, H2O...are there more or fewer shootings in homes where there are no guns than in homes where there are guns?
