Medical question, "hole" in the center of my back

As a toddler I had spinal meningitis. I have no memory of it, but I was told by my mother that I was on the verge of death, but made it.

Anyway I have scars on both ankles on the inside, just above the ankle bone and Pardon my complete lack of medical knowledge, but I have a "hole", "void", or "divot", about the size of a golf ball, in the center of my lower back.

I assume the ankle scars had something to do with IV fluids? Is the "hole" possibly part of the treatment? I was treated in 1974.

@chaelsonnenfan,
The most authoritative person/persons to answer that would be a dcotor. What does your doctor say when you ask?

What do your parents say?

@Ragman,
I don't have a doctor currently. Dad deceased. Mom has memory issues associated with being elderly.

I've had it since I can remember. I just wanted to ask someone familiar with the treatment used in 1974.

@chaelsonnenfan,
It is unrealistic to expect anyone here to answer with any degree of accuracy. Frankly, based on the info you provide, IMHO it's not knowable other than to say that meningitis is an illness that involves spinal cord, spinal fluid and the brain. As a guess, they must have need to operate on your spine. Back in past, they didn't have laser optics (keyhole) surgery so the scars were more involved and larger.

"Meningitis is inflammation of the protective membranes covering the brain and spinal cord, known collectively as the meninges. The inflammation may be caused by infection with viruses, bacteria, or other microorganisms, and less commonly by certain drugs. Meningitis can be life-threatening because of the inflammation's proximity to the brain and spinal cord; therefore, the condition is classified as a medical emergency"

At some point in the past you might have thought this was important enough to ask the doctor or medical professional?

Sorry to see that you don't have a dotor. Out of curiosity, is that because you have no medical benefits from your past employer or you have made a choice NOT to see a doctor?

@Ragman,
"At some point in the past you might have thought this was important enough to ask the doctor or medical professional?"

I'm new to this site. I thought that there might be a nurse or medical pro on here.

It's really a curiousity of mine, rather than a medical issue. It causes me no pain and I know it is not life threatening. Thanks for responding.

@chaelsonnenfan,
Wishing you the best. After my layoff, I chose to pick up COBRA extended medical benefits so I could maintain seeing a medical professional. I recognize that not everyone can afford those monthly payments, though.

I hope that you have access to a doctor soon.

@chaelsonnenfan,
Did you ask your parents about it?It would also help you a lot if you could consult the doctor so it may be clearer for you what that "hole" is really about.

@chaelsonnenfan,
The ankle scars and the "indentation hole" in your back may not have anything to do with each other.

Please try to find your youth records to sort this all out. You need to have thhis info as you grow older.

Good luck.
