Probably not apropos to the subject of this thread, but I was just reminded of something I once read about the late Hollywood director, Sam Peckinpah. In an article I read he was quoted as saying that he wanted to make movies about "the third man." He wasn't talking about the Graham Greene book/Orson Welles movie. He was talking about Westerns. He said that in many Western movies there is a scene where at least three "good guys" rush into the hideaout of the "bad" guys, guns blazing. There is the hero and the hero's sidekick and someone else. We know who the protagonist is; we know who the sidekick is and what he is like. But who is the third man? A lot of times he's the one killed in the shoot-out after which the hero and sidekick get all the glory. The third man remains anonymous to the audience. He's the one Peckinpah said he wanted to glorify.
