What to do with the bot derived pre-spam threads

Please select one of the following:

A. Thumb them down immediately
B. Have fun with them, possibly to work off frustration about their appearance, and then thumb them down
C. Have fun with them and then leave them to see what others say, then thumb them down
D. Have fun with them and then leave them for however long it will take for full fledged spam to show up
E. Leave them alone until full fledged spam shows up and then you can report it
F. Give up on waiting for spam as some tools (bot derived or human) gives a poorly written or copied not quite spam response - and thumb those down in frustration
G. Leave them alone as one or more might be posts from real and well meaning people and you wouldn't want to be rude
H. Answer them sincerely
I. Leave them alone as you never ever thumb a post down
J. Other

I'm going with this answer as well Smile I like it.

Unless its a spam advertising thread then I just report it, I have ten on status report just from this morning.

@ossobuco,
Better forum software security that automatically catches an automated spambot before they can make an account/ register. That would stop a large amount of spam I'm guessing.

@aspvenom,
I've observed spammers changing tactics so I figure that is hard to do even if it could be done and works for a while - but I'm tech dumb.

Meantime, I don't get the point of the bot stuff, especially the plagiarism-like moves they make.. why do they do that? They don't usually give a sales link - that I see, anyway. Is it a DNS type thing? (not that I know much about that, except that it sometimes happens big time)

It’s an email I get when I report a thread. I just started reporting them on 07/29/12 and its 9 pages long, it lets me know when the mods have received the report and the action they took.

Usually when I check the report it will say closed, which means the mods deleted the spam thread, most are people posting links trying to sell stuff and once in a while they will post links to porn sites.

I see all the new threads when I log in early in the morning.

@jcboy,
I'm not clear - you report the-not-quite-spam-yet threads that we all by now consider to be set ups for spammers but don't give links, and they are deleted?
I suppose I should ask on the contact us button if they want us to do that. If twenty people did that.. lot of work for them. On the other hand, it gives them a list of those not-yet-spam threads, which might be a help.

@ossobuco,
Oh I don't report the not quite spam threads, only when they post links.

I thought I saw a post about that once. I think it does help the mods when you report otherwise the mods would have to go and read every thread to find them because sometimes it’s not just a new thread that is started by a new poster posting links trying to sell shoes etc but they will get sneaky and make a post on an ongoing thread.

Maybe one of the mods will comment, I hope it doesn’t create more work for them.

@jcboy,
I think you're right. There have been several comments from moderators about this.

The ones that really annoy me are the ones who post on older threads.

Good to know you're on early morning clean-up Sitch.

@jcboy,
I misunderstood you, I thought you meant you did report the pre-spams.

A lot of us report spam, much as you're saying. And, with ehBeth, the ones to the older threads are the tricksters.

Jesus wept . . . if you see a spam thread, report it, no angst required. If there is no link, it ain't spam, move on.

There is entirely too much manufactured drama around here.
