@Harper,
What really strikes me about that article is its tone of sadness and resignation. Brooks isn't angry, he isn't attacking Romney, he doesn't ignore what Romney said, he's just sad at the ignorance of it all. This is a nice line:

You know what. It is rather sad that the nation cannot find a better alternative to Obama.

These polls don't make too much sense when you consider that Obama is pulling away considerably in all the swing states save North Carolina. Perhaps, people are paying more attention spurred by commercial blitzes from both sides.
