How about those terrible people who split their infinitives?

One solution: Facebook does not have a vote down button only a vote up (like) button.

Same with Guardian discussions & quite a few other online forums I frequent.
Off the top of my head I can't think of any which have an equivalent thumbs-down option.
I think this is far preferable to the thumbs down & up system here.
I much prefer a positive ratings system which actually encourages posters to participate, compared to one where anonymous "thumbs-downers" can have a negative impact without any input at all into the discussion.
I also think it's a fair expectation that if a poster wants to register disagreement that they say why.
Or at the very least, we should be able to identify the thumbs-downers, along with the thumbs-uppers. There's an integrity about that which definitely appeals to me. How many thumbs-downers & how many thumbs up to a particular post? At the moment we have no idea.
Plus, if posters don't agree with some perspectives which have been posted in discussions here, it would certainly make things a lot more interesting if they posted counter-arguments, rather than registering anonymous negative "votes", which could mean anything.

The only time I vote thumbs down on a thread is when I'm sick and tired of seeing it listed on "My Posts." Not really a negative vote.

I occasionally vote thumbs up or down on a particular post. But that happens rarely. Mostly I don't think about it.

I strongly disagree with olga about knowing who votes up or down. This raises all kinds of issues I don't think we need here. Why did you vote me down. I thought you liked me. I want XYZ to like me. I'll give her a thumbs up. I'm pissed off at ABC. I'll give him a thumbs down. I don't think this is the way to go.

I wouldn't mind seeing a way to eliminate a thread from a list without having to vote it down.

On the subject of the thread, I have no problem with the voting system, including the thumbs-down. It's a simple fact of life that many people dislike what I write, be it in "relationships and family" threads or even the more mellow realm of politics threads. Why should A2K make it harder for them to express their displeasure than for the people who like my posts to record their approval?

In an ideal world, A2K would record up- and down votes separately. I would much rather write posts that get five thumbs up and five thumbs down than ones that get no reaction at all. In the current system, both kinds of posts get the same score, which is unhelpful. But that's a very minor thing for me, and changing it would probably be more trouble than it's worth.

@Lustig Andrei,
...honestly, its disgusting, ya all make a big fuss with language correctness even when clearly not affecting the meaning it carrys...I would accept criticism when meaning is affected, which sometimes is, but clearly that is not the drive behind it... the price for universal usage in a phase of transition seams a effort you're not willing to pay...perhaps Mandarin will do a better job when the time comes...fukin mediocre idiots...

I think that should be either:

"...fuckin' mediocre idiots..."

...or...

"...******* mediocre idiots...".

In either case, the thought you are offering would be improved by removing the word "mediocre."

@Fil Albuquerque,
I think you've been taking lessons from JTT, Fil. You also seem to have lost your sense of humor if you didn't realize that my post re: split infinitives was meant as sarcasm.

I suppose that was mostly tongue in cheek, Thomas, but 'which' is fine. It's used for humans in some limited situations where the reference is highly general.

It's telling though that you left Dlowan speechless. That's pretty much always the case with those who simply memorize prescriptions.

@Lustig Andrei,
I apologise for my attitude in my own eyes not because I thought your feelings could be hurt, which would over do it...the initial comment wasn't even particularly addressing you although I was replying to you...anyway just forget the whole thing...

On reflection, Roberta, I can see that this could be - most likely would be - problematic .... fair enough to disagree.

So OK, removing that part of my original post, I stand by the rest of my responses to the thumbing up & down system:
