I guess we can "knock on wood" and feel lucky, because my wife's mother lived with us until she passed away, but she had most of her faculties to the end. She did get forgetful towards the end, and was frequently confused. She would ask for breakfast after we'd already had dinner and was ready for bed.

Tomkitten--

This has happened to me when I've inadvertently deleted a reminder for a thread without checking it first.

When you get a good run up on deleting unwanted e mails, you can be too enthusiastic.

Noddy - the hysterical part of the situation is that I just gave this same advice to someone else on another thread!

Tomkitten--

We should start a new, provocative thread:

Is senility catching?

I'm definitely out of the incubation period and I'm probably very contageous.

Noddy - I don't really care, as long as I don't come out in spots.

saw "the sunshine boys" this afternoon in local summer theatre - mostly an older crowd - we probably saw ourselves portrayed on stage Shocked Laughing

plenty of canes and hearing aids !

since the theatre is about twenty feet below the access road - it's right on the st. lawrence river in a beautiful location - , the theatre "thoughtfully" provides a shuttle service by modified golf-cart from the access road to the theatre - that's what i call service !

had a good laugh nevertheless ; even though some of the lines are a bit dated !

My Mom went into the hospital July 4. The good folks at her nursing home
sent me several notices detailing their policies. She is considered
discharged. As a private-pay resident, they'll hold her bed for 30 days only.
Once she goes on Medicare that goes down to 10 days. Of course, she'll be
charged the full room rate while she's gone.

She told me today she had been hearing voices while she was there. It
seemed to her as if she were talikng to herself but not making sense.
Thankfully that has stopped.

hbg. Isn't that what life's all about? We can accept our getting older, and laughing at ourselves. The alternative isn't even a good option. Wink

George--

How exasperating--emotionally and financially.

Good that your mother has enough critical marbles to spot her own illogic.

Is she a demanding invalid?

Hold your dominion.

Sorry about your mother, George.

Is it reasonable to assume she'll be out of the hospital in time to claim her bed?

George, We who have taken care of aging parents can empathize with you. Something funny happens with our brains as we age. My wife's father, one of the most gentle individuals I have ever met, once said to his daughter at dinner time "You're trying to kill me. You put poison in my food. I'm going to call the police!"

c.i.- One of the behaviors that is often seen in dementia is paranoid ideation. It is really easy to understand. The brain is deteriorating, and the person is not processing input correctly.

There is a lot of frustration that these people encounter on a daily basis. In addition, many older people have hearing problems, and process verbal messages incorrectly. Also, people with dementia have problems with impulse control and maintaining appropriate boundries.

Hoping, it sorts out fine for your mother, George1

---------

Bed only hold for 30/10 days - is that normally done so?
(espeically the 10 day regulation sems to be absurd: older people do stay longer in hospitals).

Thanks all for the kind words and support.
I finally got some information from the doctor.
He is concerned about her disorientation and has ordered a neurological
work-up. I'm scared spitless and cannot even mention the A-word.

Walter~
These seem to be the rules they play by.
You can get the "hold" extended by paying the full rate for (empty) bed.
Of course, if you're on Medicaid, that means you don't have any money.
You don't get to go on Medicaid until you've been reduced to less than
$2000 in assets.
