Wilso, You gotta get out of the house once in awhile to a bagel store. Then, you'll know the difference between donuts and bagels. Wink c.i.

Don't know that I've ever seen a bagel store. I'll have to check this out.

Wilso, You don't have to go to a bagel store. Most supermarkets carry them! c.i.

c.i., are you sure that antipodean supermarkets will stock them?

You have all my sympathy . . . you're not required to eat them, are you? I can think of no earthly use for a bagel--they're not even very good as doorstops . . .

Okay. So you've got bagels, even if you do confuse them with donuts (shaking head sadly). There is an odd bread-like form we find here in the states labeled Australian Toaster Muffins. Do you Antipodeans really eat those?

Apparently Wilso lives in the bush. Oddly enough, the dogs got to split a bagel this morning. We didn't have anything to give them to chew on, so we gave 'em a stale bagel. Kept 'em occupied for longer than you'd think...

One of the many wonderful things about canine companions, they are so easily pleased. Anything remotely edible which is difficult to chew is a joy to a dog . . .

Anyone ever try Bagel Bites? These are in the frozen food section and are basically little bagel pizzas. Truly disgusting.

We eat them - but we call them muffins, or English muffins...

This thread started, I suspect, because I said we didn't have bagels.

We still don't - where I live, and I suspect, not where Wilso lives either. Mr Stillwater, who also comes from Sydney, must live in a bagel-philic area - perhaps the eastern suburbs. They have a history of odd behaviours there. Confused

Wilso, mate - you've missed nothing. Indeed, you've probably been lucky. Bagels are weird, dry chewy bready type things, nowhere near as appetising as the rusks you had as a kid! I mean, they serve them with chopped liver - what does that tell you about how good they are to start? I can't imagine anything being improved by the addition of chopped liver.

Imagine a big round donut, about a week old, so it's hard, and then boiled, and some appalling filling added - that's a close approximation of a bagel.

They have some funny practices in some parts of the world! Laughing

With all due respect, it's very hard to get a good bagel in America -- never mind down there, where you all smear vegemite on bread.

But a good 'un, from New York or the right places in New Jersey or Chicagoland or even Los Angeles or Berkeley or San Francisco, with a properly large shmear of whipped cream cheese and some lox...

Goddamnit I'm hungry...

I hated bagels until we found Noah's. What a revelation.

By the way, bagel bites and English Muffins have nothing in common.

If you're turned on to Noah's, you've gotta get out east and have the real thing. Good God almighty, that is something else. Just remember that "everything" out there includes salt.

From my (admittedly limited) experience, bagels and food have nothing in common!
