Does anyone know how long it would have taken to lay 1 mile of track in 1840 - 1850

The only way you're going to get this answer is to march down to a serious (nonbranch) public or university library and ask a librarian for help into finding a railroad engineering book published in that time or find an engineering heavy railroad history book.
