Now here a little paranoia for Ya'll to think about--and interestingly it comes from a 5/3/12 item in Huffpo and not the usual popular paranoia press of Faux, Drudge or Brietbart.

Al Qaeda's Inspire Magazine Returns, Recommends Forest Fires As Next Great Terror Innovation

Quote:
issue nine carries equally lethal advice, with "It Is of Your Freedom to Ignite a Firebomb," which gives detailed instructions on how to ignite an "ember bomb" in a U.S. forest, recommending Montana because of the rapid population growth in wooded areas. "In America, there are more houses built in the [countryside] than in the cities," says the writer, who uses the pseudonym The AQ Chef. "It is difficult to choose a better place [than] in the valleys of Montana."

Nevertheless this is a scary concept--particularly considering what is happening now in Colorado and Utah.

@raprap,
Forest fires are a result of poor forest management and weather. My son predicted this result years ago.

@raprap,
That's a scary idea. Sadly, most of these fires are caused by the actions of stupid humans. We had a bad one here last year that was caused by arsonists. Almost destroyed one town completely. My heart goes out to them all. It's beyond terrible.

@RABEL222,
Most of the Spring/Summer fires in the West are from lightning strikes.

The severity of the most recent ones is due to damage the mountain pine beetle insects have done in the forests. A large percentage of Western forest is nothing but dead trees just waiting for a spark.

@RABEL222,
Colorado for years has had some of the messiest forests--fallen limbs and slash everywhere. I am amazed how better managed the forests in New Mexico are managed.

@raprap,
Oddly, the federal lands above ~ 7,000* feet are managed by National Forest Service, with those below that elevation being managed by Bureau of Land Management. The same is true of both states of course, and both have lots of federal land.

*Not sure of the exact elevation that deliniates the two services, but this explains why, say, The Carson National Forest consists of so many non contigueous islands.

The deputy leader of al-Qaeda’s affiliate in Yemen was killed in an airstrike Monday, according to the Yemeni government, five years after he was released from the U.S. prison in Guantanamo Bay in a failed attempt at rehabilitation.

Said Ali al-Shihri, a Saudi national and the deputy emir of al-Qaeda in the Arabian Peninsula, and six other people were killed in a military operation in the southern Yemeni province of Hadramaut, the Yemeni Defense Ministry said in a brief statement.
