Bringing home an adult dog or older puppy from a shelter or rescue differs in many ways from bringing home a very young puppy. Each has its pros and cons. It's only fair that you should know what to expect for the first few weeks after your newly adopted dog arrives in your home. After all, the more prepared you are, the more smoothly the transition will go. But how to get started?

And I bet whichever shelter you visit in order to adopt the nonpuppy, they have counseling and guidance for a first time dog owner.

Plus we have plenty of dog owners and/or experts here at a2k.

@jeccyka,
Patience, patience, patience - that's what everyone needs who adopts a shelter dog. These poor pups are often mistreated, not house broken and/or have many behavioral problems.

Once you gain their trust and have them house broken, they're the most loving animals you can ever have. Be gentle with them, love them and everything else will fall in place.
