ok so me and the nun are looking at a vintage 911 sunroof coupe (1989) the last year of the classic 911 body with the 3.2 litre engine. any thoughts out there?
no thoughts here. thanks for asking, though.
Have you got a good mechanic?
Someone who specializes in German vehicles?
Seriously.
Service history is VERY important with 911's.
Make sure the timing belt has been changed regularly.
Check that the sunroof doesn't leak.
Check there are no cracks in any glass. (Very expensive!)
Check for crash damage and signs of a rollcage being removed.
Have it checked by a specialist Porsche mechanic before you buy it.
I would advise against buying if it has been modified by anyone other than Porsche.
If you treat them right 911's are pretty bullet proof.
If you don't they fall apart and cost BIG money to fix.
Damn, I wish I could afford one! Good luck.
Will you adopt me ? I always wanted to drive dad's car !!
Adrian says it right. You really wanna be careful buying a vintage performance car unless you're real comfortable with such common household tools as MIG welders and hydraulic gear-presses. They're fun though, if you can do your own wrenchin', or afford to pay a competent, trustworthy pro to do it for you. They do take a bit of wrenchin', though, as just course-of-normal-maintenance. One thing about 911's, they're a little rear-twitchy at speed, and the back will swap ends almost without warning if you get overly enthusiastic tossin' the puppy through the Esses. Embarrassing as hell.
Pretty. Does it come with a mechanic?
get a red plasma powder coat on those inner wheels. Id lose the spoiler, but Im a clean lines kind of guy
You must buy this car, you cannot pass it by. Youre not gonna be doing warp 9 , you must obey laws, and its a nice way to watch the land pass by. Just make sure the AC works, Porches tend to get warm around the trans
Adrian and Timber, we have a complete history of the car, with all the service records.
Bethie, yes, I have my own, personal 'handyman,' Sweet Baby Dys. He has had lots of classic cars such as Elva, Lotus Elan '65 or '66, Sonnett, MGA and numerous British motorbikes.
Farmerman, we both dislike the whale tail. It is definitely coming off. Simple and classic for us.
If the price is right, Buy it! I agree, lose the tail, and remember you are taking on a responsibilty, look after it.
Adrian, we will treat it like a grandchild.
Osso, I love your signature line--couldn't be more appropriate.
Just wait for San Francisco--we'll give you a ride.
Wheeeee!!!
Um, might be nice going along near Tomales...

Bob had a Sonnett? I bought a Saab Sonnett and took delivery in Sweden in 1968 and drove it all over the country. It was a beautiful blue flibreglass two seater. Saab exported all Sonnetts so the Swedes couldn't buy them. Every time I stopped anywhere, the men and boys would come over to admire my car.
It took me a while to get used to the driving position, practically laying on my back instead of sitting upright. I had my two children with me and you should have seen them squeeze into the one passenger seat.
Now in my dotage years, I drive a 1990 Volvo. Go figure!

My buddy has that exact car in convertible form. 1989, red with black leather, 5-spd, spoiler, just turned 70K. Car is absolutely immaculate. He still spent a good $6K+ making the car "right."
You wanna know how bright my friend is? When he originally brought it to a mechanic to have him go through it, his boss was next to him and said jokingly, "have him check the coolant." My buddy then said that to the mechanic(for those who don't know...it's an air cooled engine, no coolant).
You gotta do it...it's a sweet classic 911.
i think the kids just got back from pickin' it up.
