When They say "I hate America", what do you think They mean?

hmmmmmmm

O Brother Where art thou

Raising Arizona

Fargo

hmmmmmmm, they're all so good and so different, and so similar in their weirdness. Interesting, good, very American (to me), film-makers.

Well clearly "The Big Lebowski" and "Oh Brother Where art Thou" seem to top everyone's lists. (I'm also inclined to follow Thomas' lead 'cause he's smarter than I am.)

You know I have NEVER even heard of these guys or any of their films. Remarkable ! Perhaps that is a good indicator of just how out of touch I am (Though, I find it it pleasant enough where I am).

I really hate to take advice, or (worse) to accept ideas not my own. I hope some here appreciate what I am doing.

A certain stillness in the air here suggests that everyone comprehends the significance of this moment.

2014.

Which two ruminants were responsible for the decline and fall of the Red Empire.

Ans a. Rock of Gibralter b. Posh spice.

ps

Start with Lebowski and O Brother Where Art Thou. Keep an eye out (perhaps best done on supplementary viewings) for the editing, set detail, and use of music.

The beer better be good, and the waitresses buxom, because this isn't a quiz I'm going to win.

Taste and preference is always unique and subjective...Hudsucker Proxy is, to my mind, their weakest work but I wouldn't argue the point.

When watching The Big Lebowski, be advised that the title is a play on The Big Sleep.

This thread has digressed to dlowanesque levels!

My 2 Cents

The Coens are actually from Minnesota.

georgeob1 knows more about Latin America than he is willing to accept.

English football means nothing to me ever since Sheffield Wednesday and Nottingham Forest, the only teams with poetic names, fell from the Premier League.

I once saw a young chap at Gatwick with a T-shirt that said "Liverpool 39, Juventus 1". I laughed and then felt ashamed of my laughter. He looked like he wouldn't kill a fly. I just hoped he wasn't boarding a plane to Italy.
"English football fan" and "Hooligan" are now synonims.
(We, in the different continents, tend to forget that most football stadiums in the UK don't even have a fence, but Heysel still lingers).

All the premiership grounds are all seater now fbaezer. Most are new or have been completely refurbished. Its unfortunate that English football fans still have a reputation for hooliganism...even when they behave themselves. Police have been known to attack English fans having a quiet drink in the bar before the game. I think its called a pre emptive strike.

I've always followed Manchester United. But for a long time I only ever kept one eye on the scoreline, because frankly I was ashamed to be associated with some of the antics that went on with Utd fans. Then football started to get its act together (it had to or it would die out) and it started to change. I really got more interested again in 1992/3 when my father died- a life long - red, and although he never saw it, Utd won the league and the first Premiership title that year after 26 years of winning (not much). I felt they did it for him.

but what goes around comes around. The game is criticised now for being too middle class - prawn sandwich eating types ! And the commercialism is beginning to ruin it for me. I used to play rugby union at school, now thats something thats coming back!

They say Rugby Union is a game for ruffians played by gentlemen. And football (association football or soccer) is a game for gentlemen played by ruffians. There's some truth in that.

This is so amusing, since I went to see "Eurotrip" yesterday with the GF. 1.5 hours of stereotypes, but hilariously done! Especially The Man Utd hooligans! Very Happy

You are watching R-rated films?

(Is that the reason that the pics don't show up?)

Football tickets in Europe are expensive.

I go with my two sons and my daughter to some games here in Mexico. We sit right next to the "toughest" fans here (upper deck, center: about 6 dollars per person). We drink our beers (soda for the 10 year old girl), sing (our team's followship is known for being quite foul mouthed) and often yell our heads off. There's not a hint of physical violence.
If it's a "classic", though, we either go to the "gold & blue" zone (about 10 dollars per person) or don't bring the small girl along.

I'll be in the North Bank for the game against Bolton, tomorrow. I've got a 1/3 share of a season ticket, which works out about £40 per game...ouch!

Off now...happy weekends, everyone!

You are indeed correct!

Minnesota! Hell they're probably Lutherans.- maybe even Catholics.

I did see the "Hudsucker Proxy" ! Fairly good. Interesting mostly for the character of the girlfriend, also the Paul Newman role. Good to know I'm not completely out of touch.

For Kitchen Pete - I generally prefer slavish agreement to defense of my right to speak.
