If you are elderly and poor, prison is better than a retirement home

If you are in old age, with no family and little money, your options are slim if you need living assistance.

Wasting away at home is a tragic possibility and government funded retirement homes might only be an option once your assets are depleted. Would you be better off committing a crime and going to prison where you receive food, clothing, and medical care? We decided to find out.

Regardless of your state, province, or national government, going into old age and needing care while holding little or no individual assets is a dicey situation. Would you be better off in a prison than a retirement home if you lack financial assets or family?

For the rest of the financial planning article:

So? What crime would you commit to get imprisoned in order to get free elder care based living assistance? Rob a bank or two? Carjack a Mercedes from a wealthy neighbor? Steal cable TV?

@tsarstepan,
It has to be something that gives you at least 20 years, so you're not tossed out at 90+....

Armed (with umbrella) bank robbery and false imprisonment (hostages)
would do it, I guess. Of course if you get away with robbing a bank, you can do it again. Repeat offenders get a stiffer sentence....or here in California it would be 3 strikes and you're out.

@George,
Conspiracy to kill a Bald Eagle. Just find a like minded individual, and you don't even have to loiter. You're just as guilty if you conspire with your wife over dinner. Oh, and find a compliant federal prosecutor.

@CalamityJane,
I don't think that this would work very well, the courts may just find that they weren't in a good mind (dementia or Azheimer's), and institutionalize them anyways, but it would probably be to a long-term care lockdown unit.
