We don't look kindly on grandiosity in political speech here - for politicians in different countries, different standards ;-)

Shame. I love getting a look at British Parliament from time to time. And there are occasionally some wild clips on the TV of brawling Thai legislators...

That is interesting - US politicians often seem very grandiose to us, because of the stuff about god and "this great country of ours" - overt patriotism seems very florid and silly (though it is starting to happen here - grrrrr).

'Tis all in the relativity....

We usually see the Japanese engaging in the fisticuffs. Haven't seen it for a while though.

The pile of reeking bovine fecal matter is grandiose, but the emotional content, the level of passion and commitment to message, the strength of conviction in goals and means, is, at least as far as I am concerned, lacking.

(Was watching C-SPAN the other night, a few congressional folk talking in the middle of the night just to get some statements on record, who were actually quite impassioned, quite informed, quite willing to take a firm stance on a thin limb. Sadly, nobody you ever see or read about in any of the most influential American news outlets.)

I still think Diane Sawyer's report about the microphone - mentioned somewhere back on this topic - is interesting.

Didn't CNN, et al, understand that the mic picked up and highlighted the 'yeah' with non-true sound?

What do they care? It's good "news." I didn't see it replayed as much on CNN as I did on the comedy shows, though, and -- lets admit it, more people watch those, anyway.

(And given the crap I was watching on CNN this morning, that may not be such a bad thing.)

But it wouldn't have been picked up on the comedy shows, would it, if it hadn't been a heightened effect???

Howard seemed to me to do plenty of heightening on his own. Frankly, I find it pretty comedic. Not as comedic as Shrub parachuting onto the flight deck in his codpiece, but comedic nonetheless.

I didn't even see it. I'm looking at the irony re what was in the link about the particular microphone they picked that day. I don't even know how unusual that is to do.

It's been my impression that the technical angle of the campaign coverage has been a little sketchy in general. There have been a lot of audio issues throughout -- generally, when I'm watching, to do with not being able to hear the candidate very well. I can tell you from experience that live sound reinforcement and recording is no picnic.
