I have to write a paper comparing the huns to other nomadic tribes of the same time. Any ideas would be appriciated.
The Huns were mounted on sturdy ponies from the Mongolian and central asian steppes. The only other nomadic people of the time who were similarly mounted were the Visigoths and Ostrogoths, who did not, however, use missle weapons. That was the other advantage of the Huns, they used short bows and arrows, and the bow was a composite bow, made by glueing together strips of limber wood, untanned hide and bone. The name Hun very likely derives from H'siung Nu (not very good at putting Chinese words into roman characters, you should look that one up), which means "horse barbarian slaves," a rather wishful-thinking term the Chinese had for the mounted tribesmen of the Yellow River loop and the Gansu (Kansu?) corridor--i rather doubt that many of them were actually enslaved by the Chinese.
The Goths were pushed west toward the Roman empire by the irruption of the Huns from the central asian highlands into the eastern European plains. It would help if you compare them to the Mongols, the Tatars and the Goths. Use these various names to do some on-line searching.
Supposing, your theme can be narrowed to nomads in 'Eurasia' and that you are not expected to cover any nomadic tribe of that time period(s) [would be interesting, what you mean with "same time" ), I agree completely with Setanta's suggestion.
Might be worth, perhaps, mentioning the Scythians (who replaced the Cimmerians) as well. And perhaps pointing to 'Völkerwanderung' (migration of peoples).
The web is full of really good sites!
Thank you both for your suggestions, and i will definentally look on the web for more information.
