A pleasant hubbub rose from the guests, who, at the tinkling of
a glass, burst into a warm round of applause as the happy couple
arrived and began to circulate among the gathering,

This sounds a bit like a wedding feast. At such events, it's customary for people to tap a spoon against a wine glass to get people's attention.
