I read across these two companies in a novel. The companies are both in Vancouver in 1950.
What kinds of business did these two companies deal with?
Can we guess from theie names?
First things first: You might say "I read about" or "I came across," but one would not say "I read across."
As for the substance of your question: Woodworking means carpentry, and usually means carpentry requiring a high degree of skill. It would mean people who make furniture, or cabinets, staircases--the kind of working with wood for which one needs skill and experience. A junk company implies someone who picks up discarded items--broken furniture, broken-down appliances, scrap lunber, scrap metal, old bottles and cans--in order to salvage anything useful from them.
In my opinion, it is unlikely that anyone would use such company names, though.
