‘You expected this to be tidy?’ The doctor looked up, his eyes
widening with indignation before settling on her coolly. ‘You knew
what the risks were before you came here. Women like you, with
your fancy Chutney Mary clothes and loose morals. You think this
is how decent women behave?’ He jerked his head at Serafina, still
groaning beneath the anaesthesia, now fast wearing off. ‘She was
lucky. It was straightforward this time. Maybe next time she won’t
be so fortunate.’ He picked up his bag distastefully. ‘Woman like you
should learn to keep your legs closed.’

@kkfengdao,
K, I've never heard this term but I looked it up and it looks like it is an Indian slang term for old fashioned or a country bumpkin. Clothes that are no longer in style.

@kkfengdao,
My grandmother, an Indian Christian from Banglore, has passed this term down in our family too. I have heard my aunts use it very often as a derogatory term for the local Christian converts here in Pakistan, probably because of their loud and garish taste and unacceptable manners due to their socioeconomic position in this country. Chutney is a mere condiment. It is dark. Due to its strong odour it is often compared to human wastes. May be these followers of Mary were labelled as this because of their position in society. I once used it in front of my fiancé when I was 16 years old and I was reprimanded for my unladylike behaviour by my aunts. It is a racist term and very hurtful. Nobody should ever use it. At least that's what I think.

@kkfengdao,
It is an ANGLO-Indian term (common in Calcutta, India) used to describe a low class woman with cheap taste, trying to pass as upper class. She may speak in a high pitched voice, be over made up, and wear cheap, flashy clothes and jewelry, all the time trying to emulate someone of status. In America, a similar term would be 'trailer trash'. Or, Ghetto-fabulous for blacks.
