She had done her duty and tried to be generous of spirit,
all the while wishing them away, swallowing bitter tears when no one
was looking. The shame washed over her in great, drowning waves.
She removed the gloved hand from her mouth, her stinging eyes darting
to James, before taking her ravaged heart in hand and returning
their greeting.

It's a very poetic way of saying she had to gather up her self esteem and broken spirit to find the courage to face whoever had hurt her.
