This is rather weird.

This weekend, someone went into my car. They took everything out of the glove compartment and the space under the arm rest, went through them and left them on the passenger seat in a reasonably ordered pile. They were apparently looking for something.

There were lots of papers there from the normal registration stuff, to assorted repair records and receipts we haven't gotten around to dealing with yet.

Here is the strange part. They didn't seem to have taken anything. We have a rather old GPS that was out of sight (i.e. they may have missed it) that is worth something, and I had left a checkbook which they left in the pile of things they had gone through. I can't think of anything that was in the car that is missing.

And today I noticed that they had popped the trunk.

It has be a little uneasy. If they had actually stolen something I might not be so uneasy (although I don't know what I am even uneasy about). Would this make you paranoid?

Definately looking for something specific.

Did you quiz all family members?

@Rockhead,
I don't remember. I got into my car absent mindedly and started driving before I noticed anything was weird. And then I thought it was something my wife did. My wife is even more weirded out about this then I am.

I usually lock it, but it is not impossible that I forgot on this old car.

@maxdancona,
If it were unlocked, it was probably somebody taking advantage of opportunity. a lot of folks hide a spare key.

and if there was nothing worth taking, they moved on to another mark...

could have cost you a broken window for them to find out.

If somebody went to the trouble to get in it while it was locked, then I would be more worried and or curious as to what they really wanted...

@Rockhead,
If I went through a car, I would have at least taken the checkbook. And I don't know why they would have popped the trunk.

@maxdancona,
my guess is they were hunting a free ride. and you never know what you'll find in people's trunks. I can tell some stories, just from repairing and repossessing cars.

passing stolen checks is a dangerous game.

probably just kids...

@maxdancona,
It's someone you know...Think of the people who you would suspect or maybe they left something in the car...But definitely it is someone you know.
Yeah anyone who has experienced this or anything where someone has invaded their home, privacy would be paranoid and also pissed off. But it is sooooooooooo someone you know, tell us if you find the culprit

@maxdancona,
Around here, all they're usually after is easily accessible cash. They don't want something that has to be converted into cash.

@ehBeth,
I did once have a leopard print towel stolen from the car, and a plug-in vibrating car seat back. I can't imagine they got good money for that vibrating thingie.

Usually, kids. They are only looking for cash, or something they could use personally, since they have no knowledge of how to fence anything else. I have had the change I keep for parking stolen from my car before.

It was probably kids and they didn't know what a cheque book was...

@maxdancona,
Trying to pass checks is risky. They were looking for your ipod or phone, maybe something interesting in the trunk. You got off lightly but I fully understand the sense of violation.

@maxdancona,
Thanks everyone. I feel better now.

But, I think I am going to start leaving a small amount of cash in my car. If someone is going to go through my stuff, they should at least have the decency to take something.
