Here's a map, American style, of the Presidential race.

In red, states won by Peña Nieto
In yellow, states won by López Obrador
In blue, states won by Vázquez Mota

You'll notice, again, the divide between North and South.
The dividing line is the state of Mexico (formerly governed by Peña Nieto) surrounding Mexico City (formerly governed by López Obrador)
The 3 blue states are, at the North, Nuevo León and Tamaulipas, where drug gang violence has hit the most recently and Guanajuato, in the center of the country, a very Catholic and conservative state.
