The morning rounds were over, and James had been sent for by one
of the boys, who ran all the way from the house without pausing for
breath.

Doctors do morning rounds in the hospital. They visit their patients in the morning.

This is so general, I can only say you should substitute the word 'chores' for 'rounds'. As I've heard it, it usually applies to doctors visiting their patients in a hospital. It is clearly not being used that way here.

I'd say the term "morning rounds" refers originally or principally to doctors in a hospital, and nothing else.

It could be adapted for other tasks, I would not say chores, which someone has to do in the course of their daily work routine, and the sense is a "tour of inspection", checking to see if everything is in order.
