Welch Allyn

Welch Allyn, a company that manufactures medical diagnostic equipment in central New York, announced in September that they would be laying off 275 employees, or roughly 10% of their workforce over the next three years. One of the major reasons discussed for the layoffs was a proactive response to the Medical Device Tax mandated by the new healthcare law.

Dana Holding Corp.

As recently as a week ago, a global auto parts manufacturing company in Ohio known as Dana Holding Corp., warned their employees of potential layoffs, citing "$24 million over the next six years in additional U.S. health care expenses". After laying off several white collar staffers, company insiders have hinted at more to come. The company will have to cover the additional $24 million cost somehow, which will likely equate to numerous cuts in their current workforce of 25,500 worldwide.

Stryker

One of the biggest medical device manufacturers in the world, Stryker will close their facility in Orchard Park, New York, eliminating 96 jobs in December. Worse, they plan on countering the medical device tax in Obamacare by slashing 5% of their global workforce - an estimated 1,170 positions.

Boston Scientific

In October of 2009, Boston Scientific CEO Ray Elliott, warned that proposed taxes in the health care reform bill could "lead to significant job losses" for his company. Nearly two years later, Elliott announced that the company would be cutting anywhere between 1,200 and 1,400 jobs, while simultaneously shifting investments and workers overseas - to China.

Medtronic

In March of 2010, medical device maker Medtronic warned that Obamacare taxes could result in a reduction of precisely 1,000 jobs. That plan became reality when the company cut 500 positions over the summer, with another 500 set for the end of 2013.

Others

A short list of other companies facing future layoffs at the hands of Obamacare:

Smith & Nephew - 770 layoffs
Abbott Labs - 700 layoffs
Covidien - 595 layoffs
Kinetic Concepts - 427 layoffs
St. Jude Medical - 300 layoffs
Hill Rom - 200 layoffs
Beyond the complete elimination of a significant number of American jobs is another looming problem created by the health care law - a shift from full-time to part-time workers.

Handy excuse but, no, not really due to ACA

Abbott Labs - 700 layoffs

Abbott Laboratories ABT +2.14% is laying off about 550 workers and plans several hundred more layoffs throughout 2013, citing "evolving business needs."

The health-care products maker said the layoffs primarily affected workers in its global nutrition, vascular, established-pharmaceuticals and molecular-diagnostics divisions. With the exception of nutrition, these divisions reported sales declines for the third quarter.

More than half of the affected workers are in the U.S., with the rest primarily in Europe.

"Today's changes allow the businesses to better align resources to meet today's evolving business needs," said Abbott spokesman Scott Stoffel. He said he couldn't further quantify the expected number of layoffs in 2013.

Abbott has about 91,000 employees worldwide. more

@McGentrix,
Well, corporate assholes are gonna be assholes no matter what the situation is. Why should we care? It's highly likely that many of these layoffs are notin fact related to the HC bill at all, but are being presented that way for political reasons by self-interested asses who run the companies.

@McGentrix,
McG, You really don't know how the "big" picture works, do you?

Any company that threatens their workers based on the re-election of any president are playing politics and not business. Business decisions should be made on "facts" and how the macro-economics is operating in any country.

Our economy is slowly improving; that means more demand for goods and services. The demand for goods will continue to increase. To cut workers when the potential for growth is very good to excellent is about the most stupid business decision one can make.

Some people just don't understand Econ 101.

Yeah, the Washington Times is pretty much the last source I would look to for accurate reporting on issues such as this.

@JPB,
Typical use of "facts" from the conservative jerks. Mis-represent those facts to fit their unethical views of anything that has to do with politics - and not for the American people - or for the "real" purpose for job cuts.

Losers all!

I can not speak about the other companies but it seems that Medtronics is expanding in Jacksonville Florida and my company has sold them a lot of material for their new multistory building that they are currently building.

Suggestions that the company cover that $24 million by reducing executive bonuses by 1/10 of 1 percent was scoffed at by company executives.

Medtronic ponders expansion with city, state incentives
Premium content from Jacksonville Business Journal by Christian Conte, Staff Writer
Date: Friday, August 26, 2011, 6:00am EDT
JACKSONVILLE — Medical technology developer Medtronic Inc. was approved for $2.5 million in incentives from the city and state this week to expand its surgical technologies headquarters in Jacksonville.
Medtronic, for its part, has not yet decided whether it will expand — either in Jacksonville or its Texas facility — said company spokeswoman Cindy Resman.
If an expansion is completed in Jacksonville, the incentives will be used to help cover the costs of a $14.1 million expansion project at 6743 N. Southpoint Drive that includes a new 75,000-square-foot building for general office space, research and development, laboratory space and customer training labs. The expansion is also expected to add 175 full-time jobs in Jacksonville by 2015 at an average of $80,000 per year.
The incentive package that Medtronic received includes $660,000 in qualified target industry tax incentives from the city of Jacksonville and $1.87 million in state funding.

McG: I checked out the 2012 annual report for Medtronics. No whimpering about Obamacare. Worldwide revenues up after a weak 2011; profits up; expanding market share; increased spending on R&D and some $250m paid out to shareholders.

@realjohnboy,
Just as I thought; they're not going to invest all that money one year on expansion, then turn around and start cutting back. Trends don't happen that fast, and if they did, they're not doing due diligence as managers of the company.

@cicerone imposter,
It seems that you and realjohnboy have done your home work. If you take into consideration all the people involved in building that 75,000-square-foot building for general office space, research and development, you might come to the conclusion that it was about the same work force that they let go of but surly I could be wrong.

@reasoning logic,
And the following is from the Medtronic site.

Quote:

Embracing Strategic Citizenship

2012 Corporate Citizenship Summary Report

At Medtronic, we prioritize investing in employee health and wellness to avoid illnesses and injuries before they arise. This provides value to our employees and also to our business. We accomplish this by increasing awareness among employees and their dependents and providing resources and opportunities to engage in healthy activities.

Through our Total Health program, introduced to U.S. employees in 2006, Medtronic proactively addresses preventable employee risk factors, including poor diet, smoking, obesity, high blood pressure, high cholesterol, and lack of exercise. These efforts have the potential to improve employee productivity, reduce absenteeism, and save millions of dollars in healthcare costs annually, as more than 50 percent of healthcare costs are determined by lifestyle behaviors.

POSITIVE RESULTS DRIVE EXPANSION

In fiscal year 2012, our U.S. Total Health program yielded the following results:

95 percent of employees and 16 percent of their spouses are registered on the company’s Total Health web site;
90 percent of employees on a Medtronic health plan completed a health risk questionnaire;
More than 3,200 employees benefitted from lifestyle and disease management coaching.
During the year, Medtronic realized a $2.50 return on every $1 invested in the program based on cost savings as well as cost avoidance from improved health. Overall, we saved an estimated $4.6 million due to this initiative during fiscal year 2012. These results influenced Medtronic to elevate the program to a global initiative.

Due to this success, we implemented a global rollout of Total Health in 11 additional countries during fiscal year 2012, representing 60 percent of the company’s employees globally. The program features:

customized, translated Total Health web sites
health assessments
health improvement programs, including lifestyle health coaching
nutrition information, with recommendations for healthy eating
incentives to improve health and wellness
wellness challenges
flu vaccinations
employee assistance programs
health club discounts
In September 2012, we will launch our first global wellness challenge for all employees. Individuals participating in the eight-week, team-based competition can track their physical activity and weight loss. To extend the program’s benefits, employees will be able to engage in an online social networking forum associated with the initiative, which will continue after the eight-week challenge is complete.

We also plan to launch Total Health in seven additional countries during fiscal year 2013, extending the program’s reach to more than 90 percent of our employees.

This message is the complete reverse of what McG was trying to "sell."

Anytime anyone does even a modicum of research, RL, the Potemkin village seems terribly wanting.

Propaganda doesn't do well when the truth is introduced. But I must note that, in the absence of truth, it has done remarkably well in the USA.
