@Ceili,
I'll bet hbg will recall this one, Ceili

First, some info.

Evangeline, A Tale of Acadie, is an epic poem by the American poet Henry Wadsworth Longfellow, published in 1847. The poem follows an Acadian girl named Evangeline and her search for her lost love Gabriel, set during the time of the Expulsion of the Acadians.

The idea for the poem came from Longfellow's friend, Nathaniel Hawthorne. Longfellow used dactylic hexameter, imitated from Greek and Latin classics, though the choice was criticized. It was published in 1847 and became Longfellow's most famous work in his lifetime. It remains one of his most popular and enduring works.

The poem had a powerful effect in defining both Acadian history and identity in the nineteenth and twentieth century. More recent scholarship has revealed the historical errors in the poem and the complexity of the Expulsion and those involved, which the poem ignores

@Letty,
Letty
It's such a sad, romantic tale. Sadly, it's also very true.
My husband's family can trace their descendants to the first 32 families, not soldiers, to emigrate to Canada in the early 1600's. They of course settled in Grand Pre area. Not all the cajuns were sent south, but they were kicked out and they dispersed in every direction. The irony is, they moved back and those original names are all still there, everywhere.
His last name can be found in every province and state in N. America. When we were in N. Orleans, we heard all the jokes using his name, they typically went B and L walk into a bar... lol
There was even a restaurant with his last name.
Last year we visited the Acadian coast, Nova Scotia and New Brunswick and met long lost relatives. In Graveyards it seemed like every second grave marker was carved with his name.
In both places, people assumed we were local, until we opened our mouths. Wink

@Letty,
good evening , letty - i think many ( most ? ) canadians are familiar with that sad part of canadian history .

.........................................................................

Painting shows prime minister wearing nothing but a smile

" the emporer has new ( NO ) clothes " ... ... ...
the painting was done by a local ( woman ) artist and exhibited in our
central library Shocked Laughing Laughing Laughing

while there were some letters to the editor of the local paper expressing disgust - most people seem to feel there is nothing wrong with it -
the human body is never disgusting .

see here for picture of the P.M. and the artist :

I was quite taken with Bob Rae's announcement that he won't be running for the head of the Liberal Party ... mostly for this bit ...

Quote:
He also said his age — he’s 63 — was not preventing him from running, and added he was not retiring from politics.

“There’s going to be commentary on the age question, but I think that’s bullshit,” he said bluntly.

he says bullshit, we say he's got class

Coolest cop/mountie ever?

Quote:
We were camping, when this cop (Doug Sokoloski) pulled into our campsite. We all assumed that we were in trouble, but really he just wanted to shred on the guitar and play the drums a bit. What a nice fella. The man on guitar is Mathieu Babin.
