In days of yore, from Britain's shore,
Wolfe, the dauntless hero came,
And planted firm Britannia's flag,
On Canada's fair domain.
Here may it wave, our boast, our pride,
And joined in love together,
The thistle, shamrock, rose entwine
The Maple Leaf forever!
Chorus:
The Maple Leaf, our emblem dear,
The Maple Leaf forever!
God save our Queen, and Heaven bless,
The Maple Leaf forever!
At Queenston Heights and Lundy's Lane,
Our brave fathers, side by side,
For freedom, homes, and loved ones dear,
Firmly stood and nobly died;
And those dear rights which they maintained,
We swear to yield them never!
Our watchword evermore shall be,
The Maple Leaf forever!
Chorus
Our fair Dominion now extends
From Cape Race to Nootka Sound;
May peace forever be our lot,
And plenteous store abound:
And may those ties of love be ours
Which discord cannot sever,
And flourish green o'er freedom's home
The Maple Leaf forever!
Chorus
On merry England's far famed land
May kind heaven sweetly smile,
God bless old Scotland evermore
and Ireland's Em'rald Isle!
And swell the song both loud and long
Till rocks and forest quiver!
God save our Queen and Heaven bless
The Maple Leaf forever!
Chorus
I went to East York's Canada Day Parade earlier today. Later this afternoon, we're off to the multicultural celebration at the park - fireworks tonight!
whooooooooooohooooooooooooooooooo
The parade was a lot of fun - the regular fire/police/EMS antique vehicles, some kinda U.S. army jeep club, Legion folks, boy scouts, members of parliament handing out flags, Falun Dafa and Falun Gong groups, veterans groups, the Legion bunch, the garden club, Shriners in the their tiny race cars, Ulster marching band, the East York baseball boosters club etc etc ... a real neighbourhood parade
Love it!

Has anyone ever noticed that Australia's national anthem is pretty much a rip-off of "The Maple Leaf Forever?"
Although the tunes are different, there's a remarkable similarity in the structure of the two anthems and the harmonic progression. Here are the lyrics to the first verse of "Advance Australia Fair:"
Australia's sons let us rejoice,
For we are young and free;
We've golden soil and wealth for toil,
Our home is girt by sea;
Our land abounds in Nature's gifts
Of beauty rich and rare;
In hist'ry's page, let ev'ry stage
Advance Australia fair.
In joyful strains then let us sing,
Advance Australia fair.
Apart from the repeat of the last two lines, it can be sung to the tune of "The Maple Leaf Forever" without much change. Here are the lyrics of the two anthems matched line-for-line:
Australia's sons let us rejoice, In days of yore, from Britain's shore,
For we are young and free; Wolfe, the dauntless hero came,
We've golden soil and wealth for toil, And planted firm Britannia's flag,
Our home is girt by sea; On Canada's fair domain.
Our land abounds in Nature's gifts Here may it wave, our boast, our pride,
Of beauty rich and rare; And joined in love together,
In hist'ry's page, let ev'ry stage The thistle, shamrock, rose entwine
Advance Australia fair. The Maple Leaf forever!
In joyful strains then let us sing,
Advance Australia fair.
I think Canada is owed some reparations, or at least some copyright fees.
This Maple Leaf coin just sold for $4.2 million. Nominal value was $1 million but it sold for the weight of the metal, 100 kilograms of 99.99 pure gold. Maple Leaf forever is no joke! Happy Canada Day

We went to the park--first stop, the free pizza samples truck (i got three slices!). Then we wandered around and found a picnic table. I waited with the dogs while The Girl went to the fries truck and got a large poutine. Then we wandered around some more and went to the ice cream truck. Now we're back home chillin' . . .

I saw part of Canada, once. It was from the deck of a destroyer. We were coming down from Dutch Harbor. At one point, a fellow touched my arm and showed me some trees on a far distant shoreline. "That's Canada," he said. Nice country.
