Only in Canada:

https://nationalpost.com/news/canada/newfoundland-cop-attacked-by-block-of-cheese

Newfoundland police have laid charges on a “very irate male” who attacked a patrol officer with a block of cheese. Const. James Cadigan told The Canadian Press the attack is an example of the unexpected challenges that law enforcement faces while on duty. “It shows we can never let our guard down,” Cadigan said. The incident occurred during a domestic disturbance call at 9 p.m., according to a press release.

The angry man was taken to a St. John’s lock up, Canadian Press reported. The type of cheese used and the reason for the assault was not known. National Post has reached out to The Royal Newfoundland Constabulary (RNC) for comment. The man was arrested and charged with assault, assaulting a police officer and breach of probation, according to a news release.

Meanwhile, users of social media decided to poke fun at the unusual assault weapon of choice.

“He assaulted the police with a block of cheese. I mean, how dairy!” Peter Barfoot commented about the incident on X, adding the man was “was up to no gouda.”

“Wonder what got him so Cheesed off,” user Lilith Nakamura also wondered.

@Mame,
At the place I go to in Frome you can get blocks of Cheddar as long as your forearm.

That could cause some serious damage if you hit someone with it.

Actually it's very good, and a block like that is only £15, it's dirt cheap.

@Mame,
I normally get the £5 blocks.

They have a shop in Frome as well as vans and a warehouse.

The cheap stuff has been in the shop at a different price previously.

However, it's hand cut, so they're all different, and all individually priced even though they're only £5.

The trick is to get the most expensive one and they normally range from £6.50 to £7.50.

@izzythepush,
I have no idea how much your block of cheese weighs.
I buy (Irish) cheddar for € 13,09/kg sliced (a bit less when in a block) at my Aldi.

@Walter Hinteler,
0.73 kilograms for a fiver.

(I did get one of the bigger blocks.)

Olympic spying claim: New Zealand report Canada for flying drone over football training
Quote:
New Zealand’s Olympic Committee says their women’s football team had their training session disrupted by a drone flown by a staff member of the Canadian team. Defending Olympic champion Canada and New Zealand – the Football Ferns – meet in their opening match at the tournament on Thursday.

“On July 22, a drone was flown over the New Zealand women’s football team training session in St Etienne,” the NZOC said on Wednesday. “Team support members immediately reported the incident to police, leading to the drone operator, who has been identified as a support staff member of the wider Canadian Women’s football team, to be detained.”

The incident was immediately reported to the International Olympic Committee’s integrity unit and Team Canada has since apologised and is said to be investigating, the NZOC said.

“The NZOC and New Zealand Football are committed to upholding the integrity and fairness of the Olympic Games and are deeply shocked and disappointed by this incident, which occurred just three days before the sides are due to face each other in their opening game of Paris 2024,” the NZOC statement said. “At this time the NZOC’s main priority is to support the New Zealand women’s football athletes and wider team as they start their campaign.”

The Canadian Olympic Committee said they were informed of the incident involving “a non-accredited member of the Canada Soccer support team,” adding that they are “reviewing next steps with the IOC, Paris 2024, Canada Soccer and FIFA.”

“The Canadian Olympic Committee stands for fair-play and we are shocked and disappointed. We offer our heartfelt apologies to New Zealand Football, to all the players affected and to the New Zealand Olympic Committee,” the COC said in a statement.
