Here's where context comes in handy.
If the ones that are together are male or male and female, |'d use unus.
If female, una.
If neuter, unum.

Btw, my choice of "unum" over the other possibilities was based on the assumption that we do not know whether the referant is male or female.

That's a good point. Now that I think about it, I can't recall what is the most
common gender to use when there are both males and females or if the
gender is unknown. Hmmm . . .
