Plus, what does "figure legend" mean?

Context:

According to Dr. Alberts, multiple laboratories, including those of the original authors, have failed to reliably detect XMRV or other murine leukemia virus–related viruses in patients with CFS. The quality control issues include the fact that 2 of the figures and 1 table in the article have been have been retracted by the authors. Dr. Alberts notes that in response to questions about one of the retracted figures, the authors acknowledged to Science that they omitted important information from the figure legend.

it is just that -- a legend for the figure.

the legend is a list of symbols contained within the figure...

"Have been" is repeated which is probably due to careless editing or typing. It means "Among facts which suggest that there has been poor quality control are the retraction by the authors of two of the figures and one table in the article."

Ori - do you understand that a "legend" in a document can be an illustration, a bar graph, a chart or a listing of information that goes with the main document. It is placed on the same page or near the information that it explains. It is also sometimes called a "sidebar."
