Is the capitalized "Female Sex" for emphasis or meaning with the same with the word "great"?

The works and learning of the famous and renowned Mr. Lilly are too well known to the great men of this world, but more especially to the Female Sex; that it would be needless for me to say much about him here.

@kkfengdao,
I suppose "Female Sex" is being used as a title. I don't believe it correct to capitalize something for emphasis.

@roger,

Roger is right, except it does not appear to refer to a title.

Therefore I would say it should not be capitalised here. It is an error.

@McTag,
In adddition, Lilly is a female name. How can we call her " Mr. Lilly ?" Another error?

@oristarA,
Lilly is likely a surname in this case.

James Lilly would be Mr. Lilly

Thank you very much. This sentence is from an old chap book, and at first, I thought the author used these errors deliberately. That may not be the case~

Aha. In that case, it is worth mentioning that about 150 years ago or longer, it was standard practice to capitalise far more words than we do today.
If you look at a book like The Pilgrim's Progress, the text looks quite different.
