The authors of the newly-released articles write, “It is our hope that the advances in preclinical detection of Alzheimer’s will enable earlier, more effective treatment, just as nearly all of therapeutic gains in cancer, cardiovascular disease, osteoporosis, and diabetes involve treatment
before significant clinical symptoms are present. Screening and treatment programs instituted for other diseases … have already been associated with a decrease in mortality due to these conditions.”

It's saying if you can identify the presence or likely future presence of a disease before it gets bad enough to show obvious symptoms (thru such means as screenings or genetic markers, presumably), they have often been able toavert the disease or make it less severe.
