How do you draw "gruff" and "scruff" hair?

I have two characters, Gruffy and Scruffy, which I am going to feature in my comic. I did I quick drawing of them:

http://i148.photobucket.com/albums/s36/MAvericker/GruffyandScruffy1and2sets-1.jpg

I want them to have gruff hair and scruff hair, respectively.

Did I get the hair right? Which set do you like better? I can work out the details with the color schemes later and I have more sketches of these characters I want to show. Please help me out - thank you.

Hair's good. Teeth are human teeth, not cats', human teeth are big and square, for crushing fibrous plant material. Cats' teeth are carnivore teeth, pointed and sharp for tearing meat.

Gruff and Scruff look far too much like the other two you have.
Again the eyes are the same colour as the shirts. It is terrible to look at.
Why not let the hair fall direction face with one and fall direction back on the other one.

@MontereyJack,
They are ANTHROPOMORPHIC cats.

@saab,
Gruffy and Scruffy are Tuffy's brothers- they should look something alike.

@JGoldman10,
Four cats that are brothers do not look exactly alike. They do look different.
Humans like different types of cats, one like red ones, others tigerstriped the third one white.....
Psychological it is better to have different looking so I as a person can side more with one than the other.
White cats have either yellow eyes, blue eyes or oddeyes. Again something which would give them much more of a personality than the same colour as a t-shirt. Just absurd.
Correct the teeth too as Monteray Jack said.

@saab,
No - fangs are for villains. This is a CARTOON, and the cats are HUMANIZED CHARACTERS. The brothers don't look exactly alike, this thread is not about teeth - it is about HAIR. The characters' names and look define the brother's personalities.

You are wrong- white cats can have yellow, orange, green, blue, copper, hazel or azure eyes. In some rare cases they also have violet eyes:

@saab,
I like some more personality in your cats. Otherwise it will be booring to look at all those cats looking alike. You want to sell....listen to customers.

@saab,
The four brother cats do not look exactly alike - their hair helps to tell them apart. The color scheme is not that important.

That first cat pic you posted makes me feel ill.

@JGoldman10,
The hair is not enough to keep them apart.
Most people do not see small details like that.
You have to have a black ear, a black tail or some stripes some place.
The colour scheme is very important to some people.

@saab,
That is why I gave them eyes to match their shirts and varied their eye colors.

Please hold off from responding to me for a few minutes - I am going to upload more art.

The Oxford English Dictionary Second Edition defines "gruff" as:

Rough, surly, or sour in aspect or manner; said also of appearances.

And "gruffy" is:

A nickname for a gruff person, a ‘cross patch’.

"Scruffy" is defined as:

shabby, mean, dirty; slovenly, messy, untidy.

These are the definitions I had in mind when I thought of Gruffy and Scruffy.

When I was thinking of "gruff" hair I was thinking of "angry hair" and "scruff" hair as "shabby" or unkempt hair.

Looking at these 8 sets of drawings:

http://i148.photobucket.com/albums/s36/MAvericker/GruffyandScruffy1and2sets-11-1.jpg
http://i148.photobucket.com/albums/s36/MAvericker/gruffyandscruffysets3and4-1-11-1.jpg
http://i148.photobucket.com/albums/s36/MAvericker/gruffyandscruffysets5and6-1-1.jpg
http://i148.photobucket.com/albums/s36/MAvericker/gruffyandscruffysets7and8incolor.jpg

Which one do you think is a good match for Gruffy and Scruffy? Does the somewhat puffy hair represent gruff hair and the choppy hair represent scruff hair, or vice versa? I want Scruffy to have a beard, but should either of them have stubble or should I get rid of the stubble all together? Please help - thank you.

@saab,
The characters' NAMESAKES identify their personalities.

@JGoldman10,
the red-eyed dude appears to be on PCP.

Tell the shaggy doo dude to be careful around him...

@Rockhead,
I said the COLOR SCHEMES are not that important- I will work on that later. Gruffy has burgundy eyes.

So scruffy hair should be choppy-looking?

also, I think you should give one of your cats dreadlocks.

Puffy would be the obvious choice, IMHO...
