@chai2,
We used Ivory, I think. Today I use Dove or Olay face soap. I use bar soap, but the Olay comes in a tube. Nice and creamy. In the shower, just Dove. What do you use? Hey! only 10 more sleeps Smile

I liked Life Buoy as a kid, Sweetheart as teen, right now it's a facial cleansing gel for sensitive skin by Home Health. Sometimes it's peppermint pure-Castile soap made with organic oils by Dr. Bronner's Magic Soaps. Both inexpensive.

@Mame,
As a kid, my mother bought this horrible stuff called Cashmere Bouquet. I hated it but didn't know any better. As in I didn't know a person could buy something else.

In kindergarden, I had my first run in with Ivory Soap. Oh my God, that was even worse. They used it in the bathroom in my kindergarden class, and I hated that white, slimy glop. I don't think I ever picked it up. It reminded me of a big white slug or something. I would just rub my fingertips on it, disgusted by the smell, and rinse it right off.

Funny, there's a long stretch between about 20 and maybe 36 I can't remember what I used.

Then I used body wash for a long time, whatever I would get free with a rebate. That's how I found out I'm allergic to Caress. Sad
Most of the time it was great realizing how many types and scents there were.

Then, I discovered Pears soap. I found them in a dollar store and bought a bunch, after I found out how well it cleaned (glycerine) and what a wonderful smell it had.

How do you get those 20 mules in your bathroom?

@chai2,
Getting the mules in is no problem. Getting them to leave is where it becomes troublesome.

@chai2,
Dial is what I remember, since our neighbor worked for Armour and my father did an industrial picture for them and Dial was a related product (dunno how, I was a kid). Before that I don't remember. After that, whatever.

In the past bunch of years I use european or locally made soaps -
in our california coop we had a wide choice of locally made soaps, what I think of now as soap heaven. The array of beers was good too, too bad I'm not a beer maven. (Wildflowers, totally great store in Arcata) When I was flush with money in my wallet, I would get some french soap bar in the Linen Closet in Eureka that lasted forever. Here, I use discount type stores. Last bought a large bar of french soap for 4.99.

I had to ask Diane to smell it for me, as my sense of smell is insegrevious and I have to trust others.

Oh, back in CA, I also sometimes used Dr. Bronner's.

@chai2,
When with my mother, it was whatever was on sale or she had a coupon for. I recall Safeguard, Dial, Lifebuoy, Zest (the non-soap) and some other odd soaps that I can't recall. Living with other family members gave a wide range of soaps , Dial being one that I liked and then there was Jerome, who used Lava.

These days, I mainly use Dial, white.

I can't remember.

First memories are of later, when I loved Crabtree & Evelyn soaps, and we'd usually get those. Not one kind, various types. I really loved the boxes. A fancy soap store (it must've sold more than soap, but mostly soap) in Madison would put the empty boxes out in baskets for anyone to take if they wanted them, and I'd collect 'em for decorations and storage. I knew what day + time they put them out and I'd swoop in for the best ones, that was a highlight of my week during very, very financially strapped times.

This sort of thing (though the ones I liked were more intense colors and more vintage-y -- the packaging seems to have gotten more boring with time):

They were the bigger boxes that the bars of soap came in (the soap was sold individually and the boxes were left over).

Bonus -- they smelled good!

Not much specificity now either. Tends to be Ivory or Dove as a baseline, with a smattering of fancy soaps given as gifts from my mom, or from the Body Shop (sozlet likes their fancy liquid soaps).

But I bet Ed's mom used this on him as well as my mom used on me:

as did your average small town American family in the forties.

@neko nomad,
Don't know, neko. Bath water was scarce and expensive. Never noted the brand or smell of the soap. I was once tied with a rope and pitched into a canal, to save the cost of bathing.

My mom used to buy this soap and we all liked it

Today, I use all kinds of body wash as the soaps tend to dry my skin...
I particularly like this funky brand - all vegan and very gentle to my skin
in addition to smelling great
