What kind of soap did you use growing up?

@Dudley Bowring,
wow, that seems pretty involved to just make a bar of soap. Hm, I have to look up now how to make soap......

I could use a soap that keeps my white laundry white as I cannot use bleach.
Any takers?

@chai2,
That's the reason, I use body wash too, soap looks gross after a few uses,
plus the big bars aren't handy in the shower, especially when it falls onto your toes *ouch*

When I was worked (as a social worker!) in prison, inmates used the excuse "he slipped on soap in the shower" as an excuse when someone had got bruises from a fight ...

Used Zest growing up and till about 15 years ago, when they pissed me off with all of their reformulations and bar shrinkings. Used Dial for men for a few years, currently using Irish Spring.

@CalamityJane,
Soap making is pretty easy nowadays. No harder than baking a basic cake from scratch. I buy the lye already made and the fat I mostly use is olive oil. Just Google for recipes. Laundry soap is even easier.

@Dudley Bowring,
You remind me of someone I know.

That totally cracked me up.

But surely someone, i.e. mom, noticied he stunk and had grime on him?

I am not sure...if he was 8 years old...not so much...12 or 13 year olds? Hard to ignore the stench. The shoes, the pits - stinky. But that is when they start noticing girls...so they not only use soap, they start wearing deoderant and scads of Axe. Another kind of stinky. Better though.

um.... Ivory in the tub because it floated.
Boraxo to take off the baseball/soccer/football grit from the hands.
(sometimes we had to strip on the backporch.)

These days: I have one bar left of some handmade soap created by a friend of a friend who gifted it to me.

@edgarblythe,
My husband is into Irish Spring right now, the latest of those high lathering harsh soap bars. He thinks it gets him clean, but frankly, he's looking a little dried out.

Men like the peppermint flavored Dr. Bronner (at least my sons and husband) because it make you tingle in all body places.

I'm getting punchy, laughing.

@chai2,
Oh, was it Sweetheart or Cashmere Bouquet, that my stepmother bought when I was a teen? Whichever one smelled like flowers clear through the house. Sometimes, Lux. Hated Dove.

@edgarblythe,
You'll probably deny ever having used this, too, Ed.

I keep a bar just for old times sake,just to look at. One whiff of its fragrance momentarily
transports me back in time to the house where I was born in a now vanished ethnic Czech neighborhood.

Same packaging, too.

So, what did you use to clean yourself, if not soap?

Boys don't clean wash like that, they just wipe the grime off on the hand towels.

@edgarblythe,
I knew I liked you, Wayne.

That may not be all so dumb as our germ phobia has probably proliferated them while we are all less exposed.

Of course it is dumb around pathogens, so the scenarios are tricky.

Even I, not a germ phobe, am careful in hospitals, washy washy.

@ossobuco,
That probably explains why I don't get sick very often, I can't remember the last time I had the flu.
Hospitals are dangerous places, I don't mind germs but pathogens.........ugh

Nobody used Camay? We did. That and Lifeboy, which stunk to high heaven but floated so you had company in the tub. Nowadays, it's Lever. Cheapest stuff going if you shop Sam's.
