QUESTION

Is there such a word ‘luggages’, or is it just ‘luggage’ even if we have more than one piece of it?

ANSWER

‘Luggage’ is a collective noun that refers to all the stuff you’re carrying with you on your trip. So, be it one bag or a few, it’s all called ‘luggage’.

And yes there is such a word as ‘luggages’, even though it might seem redundant. Imagine that there are two groups of tourists in the hotel lobby waiting for their buses to the airport. You’d presumably have two separate areas where their luggages (that belong to either group) are all ready to be loaded onto the buses.

I wonder whether there is such a word as 'luggages' as stated above.

Thanks.

@Yoong Liat,
No, it's not correct. Neither is garbages or baggages. They are what I consider to be collective nouns. You may have three pieces of luggage or garbage but you would refer to them all as 'luggage' and 'garbage'.

Edit: Sorry, didn't read through your whole post. We just wouldn't say 'luggages' or 'garbages' - we would say "we have luggage here and she has luggage there". If luggages is a word, it isn't commonly used (ditto with garbage and baggage).

@Yoong Liat,
About 5,960,000 results for "luggages"

indicates that it is possible, YL, but I have to say that I've never heard it used in that fashion.

About 213,000,000 results for "luggage".

I don't know what's redundant about it.

@JTT,
The luggage's luck was out, the sets of luggage were destined to never meet.

@laughoutlood,

Luggages no. Most unusual, and too clumsy.
