what's the meaning of "passing reference to a few outstanding names"?

There is a great temptation to give the names and dates of very many excellent printers, but it would occupy too much space, so with just passing reference to a few outstanding names, I must pass on to later times.

= so after just quickly mentioning a few names, I will focus on later outstanding persons.
