Since when is the word 'gay' derogatory?

I was walking around the other day when I heard to children in a duel of wit and wisdom.
"You're stupid"
"Yeah, well your mom is ugly" Ooohs and aahs from the crowd of kids
"Oh man, that was so gay!"
It's not like he meant that the comment liked other comments of the same gender, or that he was calling the other kid a homosexual. The word 'gay' has become synonymous with the word 'bad' or 'stupid'.
What did gay people ever do to receive such a dubious honor? How can a word describing a sexual preference become so bad in a time when anger toward gay people is at an all-time low?
What I really want to see is someone insult another person by calling him a metrosexual.

I don't know, but it gets everywhere. I was debating this a few days ago; people don't seem to think of the meaning behind the word, but blurt it out; like people saying 'y'know' and 'like' all the time. At least this is not as bad as the kid whom I knew who said, whenever something was good, that it was 'porno.'

Well, that's children for you...

metrosexual eh? well maybe a little. my hair has gotten somewhat gray at the temples , so I went out and got some of that Greek **** and did my hair a shade lighter than it was. I felt like Richard Simmons. It took weeks to get rid of that phony look.
Im goin with the natural graying temples.
Im not a narcissist , My wife always has to tell me to comb my hair when we go out.

I like that word site. I can catch up on what the city folks sound like.

Humping trains' doors at 160 m.p.h. Is that popular? Aw, if I were a man, and stupider, I'd have a good idea on how to squeeze Amtrack for a reasonable amount of money. (Hey, if they're going to grant people money for 'trauma' after spilling McDonalds' coffee on themselves...)

I love Southpark. It's so sick, it either disgusts you or you laugh like hell.

Around here it tends to be used in place of "lame". Not quite as much of a put-down as "stupid" and generally a little more playful.

Interesting choice of words. When did "gay" become a term for homosexuals? It used to mean "joyful" or "happy".

All part of the evolving meaning of words... Wink

Now to decide if the word is a pejorative or has been ameliorated.

littleK, I'm afraid that I have been a victim of preconceived ideas. Embarrassed
Very few jazz artists that I have known, especially saxophonists, are women. Good grief, Letty. Get with the program.

To mean bad, that is definitely not one of the better evolutionary turns for "gay".
