from movie "prime suspect"
the woman detective: I want something to do, something authetic
the man (something like boss): This is the north, you know. My day, lasses stopped at home...mangled the kids...fed the washing...

I have no idea what the man is talking about. I need your help....

My day- in my day, "back in the day"
lasses- women
stopped at home- stayed at home
mangled- (joke) put the kids through a mangle, to dry them after being washed
mangle- device with spring-loaded rollers, to squeeze water out of washed clothes
fed the washing- you get the picture. The guy's on a riff, surreal.
