Which filmgoer you personally know is the most hopeless?

People hold strong opinions about everything. Love for movies is quite subjective.

But is there someone in your life (friend/relative/coworker) that is too stubborn and he or she holds such a strangely shortsighted opinion that it hurts?

I know someone who believes that:
all animated films are kiddie films;
all black and white films are outdated and boring;
all comic book movies are adolescent fodder;
all films made before _____ (insert year here) are not worthy of their time;
all films made after _____ (insert year here) are not worthy of their time;
all Hollywood produced films are garbage;
all indie/foreign produced films are pretentious;
all sequels/prequels are worthless;
all silent films are quaint and irrelevant;
because his or her love for bad movies is beyond help;

Honorable mentions:
because his or her love for reality television is crying out for an intervention.

because he or she is a New York Yankee's fan. Crying or Very sad

Well, I was probably a little more flexible when I was younger.

For example, there was a time that I watched movies with subtitles on a semi-regular basis. Nowadays though, I can't be bothered - I have no patience for them at all.

Having said that, I still do enjoy the occasional older movie - the ones that were well-made. Some movies hold by well over time, and some don't. Casablanca would be a typical classic.

As well, there was a time that I wouldn't watch reality TV shows, but these days, I thoroughly enjoy shows like Survivor and The Amazing Race.

Most of my kids will not watch older films, especially black and white. Doesn't bother me. I watch more old films than new. I am also a lifelong Yankees fan.

@edgarblythe,
Yes, indeed! I've been watching some older movies on the Turner Classic Movie network. It's nice because they show them uncut and with no commercials.

@Reyn,
I wish Turner Classic Movies streamed online. But sadly I have to miss out.

I guess I have to forgive Edgar for being a Yankees fan if he can forgive me my Red Sox Nation citizenship.

@tsarstepan,
Tastes vary. Some folks are manic about film needs. I remember Frank, we had to get there very early to see the beginning of 2001 a space odyssey from the front row (waves to Frank, if he should ever visit a2k and see this, and I hope he is well) at the biggo theater in Century City. The main thing about Frank (hi, Frank!) is that he would never shut up.

I'm from a film family (father, mother, three uncles, an aunt, a cousin) but personally learned primarily from the Fox Venice Theater's years of two films a day oldies, for several years in a row. J and I in some years went to three shows of two movies each a week ($1.50a visit). Plain fabulous, such good memories.

We all have biases, even moi who learned to get into films very different from each other. I've been slow to give a **** about cgi, at the same time I had my small office in a building with both Cameron and Super Mario (or sim name) probably not those at the same time.

I can't pull up a memory of someone whose take on a film I didn't understand.
A lot of people are more straightlaced than me, so it goes.

So I guess I'll propose myself. I don't give even a eensy hoot about vampires.

@ossobuco,
Well you recognize your biases (against vampire films) that I think kind of disqualifies you from this criticism/rant.

If you goto film sites like the forums at IMDb, these criticisms apply to certain generations. Teenagers who are spoiled by CGI and certain level of gross out comedy might wrongly believe that movies created before they were born as quaint and unwatchable. The same can be said for older generations who make the case that they don't make films like they used to....

And if you know the person's level of taste (loves movies s,t, and u), if you asked them if they seen movies x, y, and z and they never heard of it or dismiss the film because the film's era, etc.... Then the criticism apply.

@tsarstepan,
Give me a comic character based film that you think to be very good

@tsarstepan,
Ah. Well, tah, that's pathetic. (sez me)

Some of this may just be teen development, working out having opinions.
Re the elders, I've no idea. I'd probably disagree with most elders on this and that, and figure it is a function of our experiences.

@dlowan,
memories of Man from Rio.

I loved that when I saw it.
Dragged my husband to see it.
Couldn't remember why I liked it.

I think comicity connects with the belly on any given day.

@dlowan,
Iron Man is one of the best of the genre. A great popcorn flick.

The Dark Knight is the best of the lot in my opinion. Then again I have to admit being an avid fan of the Batman comics. My favorite comic to collect or used to collect at least. Great cinematography, great characters, solid acting, an iconic performance by Heath Ledger, an extraordinary score, and a nearly perfect story.

Persepolis is an animated film based on a graphic novel (memoir) by Marjane Satrapi.

The film is of the author's growing up during and after the Islamic Revolution.

You should give the latter one a chance Bunny.

Okay, Persepolis isn't in the spirit of what you asked Bunny. My bad. Trying to load the deck.

I read the graphic novel. It was great.

As far as the people you speak of...my boss.

Only likes in her words "action movies because I don't want to think about what's going on."
Her comment on just about anything else is "that was weird."

She has really made me hate the word "weird"

@chai2,
Marjane Satrapi is presently codirecting the live action adaptation of her graphic novel/memoir, Chicken with Plums (2011). http://www.imdb.com/title/tt1663321/

I haven't read it. Have you Chai? Can't wait until its release whenever that is.

@tsarstepan,
Persepolis and Waltz With Bashir are two of my favourite films.....but, as you say, they do not meet criteria.

I haven't seen either of the first two, so I suppose I will have to do so before challenging you.

I like the spectacle of some of the comic based films, but that's pretty much all they have going for them in my view.

But, of course, I do not discriminate against animation.

@chai2,
An associate for many years - we are still strong friendly acquaintances - used to go to disney parks for romantic interludes.

Her key point is that life is hard enough, entertain me.

Talk about direct opposites, us. Make me go to a disney park (family worked for disney but that is irrelevant) and I will throw up. I also don't care if a locally famous female landscape architect designed the gardens of yore.
The only time I liked Disneyland was a day when it was pouring rain.
So - I am hopeless re expectations.

But my friend and Chai's boss sound similar.

@tsarstepan,
I won't watch a movie with Jean Claude Van Dammit in it--It could be De Niro directed by a reanimated Stanley Kubrick- if Jean Claude's face appears I'm walking.
