OK, it's winter here. Day 3 of it (I'm counting Neutral ) .....& a very sad time at A2K for many of us.

I think I need to do some fun or interesting things. Maybe things I'm not in the habit of doing?

Possibly you need to cheer yourself up, too?

Here's the catch: these cheer me/us up things must be done on a very strict budget. No dancing till dawn at the Ritz while drinking French champagne, or anything like that, OK?

Anyway let's not focus on me.
What sorts of good, fun, or uplifting things have YOU done to cheer yourself up while you've not been exactly wealthy?
Which might be right now, or when you were a starving student ... or whenever ..

I'm hoping I can steal some of your ideas.

@msolga,
I'm having a glass of (not too expensive) wine right now.
I'm hoping it will put me in a more jolly frame of mind ....
...but I'm having my doubts about it.
Still, nothing ventured, nothing gained, right?

@msolga,
My friend, C, just rang.
How about she check out all the little craft markets in the hills around Melbourne & maybe we'll go to a few tomorrow? ...... early on a freezing cold Saturday morning ... which will be much, much colder up in the hills. Brrrrrr
We could check out the local produce, the jewelery and stuff like that, she said.
Hmmmm .... "OK", I said, half-heartedly.
But I usually enjoy such jaunts.
They are rarely expensive ventures.
I am going to have to drag myself up by my bootstraps, I can see that.

@dlowan,
Excellent suggestions, Deb, apart from "Watching **** TV".
That tends me make me feel as shitty as the program is.

chocolate

Hmmmm, now there's an idea! Very Happy
But, of course it can't be the very best Swiss variety. Wink

Excellent suggestion, but .......
Absolutely no motivation, sorry to say.

Good thinking, 99!

I like to cheer myself up by ordering in food. In my neighborhood, there are entire magazines full of restaurants that will deliver a meal to my door.

Haven't been all that hungry lately, so I haven't done it. Also, I don't wanna spend the money. There are a few places that I can order from that aren't too expensive if I order right. One main course and side dishes can become three meals.

I used to go sit my the water in the park along the East River. Too far to walk and I don't wanna take a cab. Phooey.

@Roberta,
And I've read about those food orders, Roberta. I think I've asked you about the details, food fool that I am!

If I lived in NYC I suspect I might do exactly the same as you.

To eat an absolutely delicious meal, from time to time, which one has not actually had to prepare for one's self, sounds like heaven to me.

Though I can fully understand why you don't do this as much these days.

@dlowan,
You think that watching "**** TV" is being picky, Deb?

Oh come on now! Smile

@msolga,
Lol. It's all taste.

Sadly, I sometimes find the weird British "reality" shows I can get now weirdly hypnotic. Like cleaning shows.

Only sometimes, I hasten to assure you!

@Setanta,
Ha! I was wondering the same thing. The weatherman was threatening snow today, luckily the temp's only dropping to a mere 5. Confused

When I'm feeling down,
I play with the hounds, go for a walk in the hood or in the dog parks.
Visit my parents.
I take a drive out to the country and take pictures.
Visit a friend. Drink copious amounts of tea or wine, depending on the time of day..
Go to a club, check out some live acts, movies, or have a great meal.
I love flea and farmers markets or church bizarres or a country fair.
This year, if I get the trailer... I'm going to catch a few rodeos and other country type affairs. I'm planning on going to the pumpkin fair in Smokey Lake this year. They grow the massive gourds weighing several hundred pounds.
These are the kinds of things I do, or plan to cheer myself up.

There's a pool hall here that is free on Mondays. You can buy a soda or beer, and meet new people.

@msolga,
I kinda like Winter. It's the only time I really enjoy hot soup...and although spicy Mexican food is good any time, it's somehow better in winter.

Winter is good for cuddling Smile

(Although that's good any time, too and it's free!)

Something cheered me up today that was totally unexpected and a little weird. (It's me. Weird is a given.)

When I was younger, I always wanted one of those swingy bouncy ponytails. My hair was certainly long enough for a ponytail. But the weight, texture, something kept the damned thing from swinging and bouncing. I even walked weird for a while trying to get it moving. No go.

Last night I decided to do something I hadn't done before. I washed my hair and decided to set the ponytail. My hair is long, and I almost always wear it in a ponytail. I had never set just the tail. It was easy and fast.

Today. Voila! A bouncy swingy ponytail. I was cheered way up. Smiling as I bounced and swung along. Twice a whipped out a comb at the hospital to ensure that the bounce remained bouncy and that the swing remained swingy.

Who would have thought at such a small and silly thing could cheer a person up?

And I warned you that it was weird.

@Roberta,
I'm cheered up too now after reading that. Very Happy

I like the A&E version of Pride and Prejudice with Colin Firth. Six tapes (not sure how many discs), 40 mins each. Sometimes I watch the entire set in one sitting. Then I'm really cheery.
