Context:

Grandpa was a carpenter
He built houses stores and banks
Chain smoked Camel cigarettes
And hammered nails in planks
He was level on the level
And shaved even every door
And voted for Eisenhower
'Cause Lincoln won the war.

@oristarA,
I'm curious to find out what you determined it to mean.

@ehBeth,

Interestingly put, ehbeth.

My dad once intoned

"Confucius he say, young man walk on hillside with girl, not on level."

Level here is a pun -- honest in character and perfect in skill.

Yes, but call it rather, a metaphor.

A metaphor that serves as a pun? Very Happy

@oristarA,

It's not a pun, I think.

Look at your dictionary for the meanings (with examples, preferably) of metaphor and pun.

Rhyme or reason, either will do in a poem. One may look into a dictionary to find reason, but it's probably better to find rhyme other way (in brain?)

I thought the Chinese were noted for their logic, eagerness to learn, and most of all, humility?

Confucious did tell us humanity, honor and morality, but not logic. Logic is the root of western culture, I believe: charactorized by Charles Darwin's theory, and now Nature - the authoritative magazine in scientific field.

And we are all eager to learn, aren't we?

So? "He was level on the level" refers to "He was a tool, honestly?" Razz

Is this an example of humour?

Reality, not humour.

To publish articles on Nature magazine is a dream for Chinese scientists! Some units in China stipulate that a scientist will be rewarded 300,000RMB (about 41,000USD) when he/she has published one article in Nature!
