Canadian Couple Stranded in Snow

Quite a long time ago I heard a very moving story. An older couple got stranded in their car in a snowstorm somewhere in Canada. They were not reached in time, but before they died, they'd written a beautiful letter to their family. I think this happened in the 1980s sometime.
Anyone heard of it, and what would the best way to track it down ?
