All nouns in French are either masculine or feminine. Which gender is being used determines how the noun will be spelled (many nouns can be either feminine or masculine), and it will determine how adjectives and past participles are spelled. It would be of little value to you in understanding English, but it is essential to writing and pronouncing French correctly.
