Context:
“It remains to be determined whether gene transfer into a deaf mouse will lead to the production of healthy cells that enable hearing. However, we have made an important step toward defining an approach that may lead to therapeutic intervention for hearing loss,” Brigande said.

Yes, it means determining the right path or method, defining the approach means, regardless of the outcome of the gene transfer, they are now at a point, where they can begin to put in place protocols, a road map or guidelines to intervene hearing loss.

Ori - you must look at the group of words to find its definition:

defining an approach

So, as someone said, it's definition #2 listed above that makes sense.

@oristarA,
In the sentence determining means the technical side of gene transfer while defining means creating a process by which he/she could do the job. e.g. inserting gene xyz in location 123 while defining approach means getting a petrie dish and dropping the sample in a liquid and so on.

It just refers to "buddy" or "friend."

It's about the usage of English

Please drop it.

Like this? -----

To take a trip from Hongkong to Tokyo:
Determining: Go to there by an airplane (the technical side of the trip: the choosing of vehicle)

Defining: Go to there from Hongkong to Taiwan to Tokyo;
Or go there directly from HK to Tokyo. (the approach)

@oristarA,
You got it. The first is conceptual, or theor, the second is the method.

Thanks.

But which is which? Are you referring to the title? First: defining? Second: determining?

@oristarA,
In the sentence 'determined' meant to get the concept of gene transfer correct while the 'defining' meant to get the procedure right in tackling the gene transfer such as getting the tools and equipment, timing and steps taken - the Laboratory work.
