Can anyone tell me what is a "genteel house"?
I read it in this sentence:
"It was Howell who introduced the young poet Swinburne to a genteel house of ill-repute in Circus Road, Regent's Park."
@jeremykong,
House of ill repute
means
house of prostitution
Then you look up "genteel" in the dictionary.
@jeremykong,
genteel means gentlest,cultivated
I'd say it means a "fashionable house" of ill-repute.
A high class whore house.
@PUNKEY,
Who ever heard of a high-class whore
@adistowin,
No.
Gentle is a different word.
Cultivated is another even more different word.
@electronicmail,

I think that that is the appearance that the bordello is trying to effect, Em, a bordello with class, a bordello that is genteel in nature, one that doesn't allow crudeness.
