I watched my brother's swearing in ceremony

Last Monday, December 2, 2002, I was sitting in the California Assembly's gallery to watch the first session of the 2003-2004 Assembly. My brother was sworn in as a group of new Assemblymen and women into the State's Assembly. We also saw the Administration of Oath of Office for the Speaker of the Assembly, Herb Wesson, by San Francisco Mayor, Willie Brown. The program was followed by the Assembly Speaker's remarks, appointment of the Speaker Pro Tempore, adoption of Assembly rules, and the introduction of bills. I was also privy to see a session of congress many years ago, and even sat in a session of Parliament when they approved nuclear energy plants in the UK. Life is full of surprises, and watching my brother sworn into the State Assembly is one of the highlights. Smile c.i.

Congratulations on your brothers success and I'm glad for you to be able to attend. Hopefully, there will be some key legislation that he may be able to attend to during his service!

Phoenix, Not only a proud day, but a big surprise when considered from our family background. When we were children, we were one of the poorest families living in our Sacramento neighborhood, and lived in hostels. We didn't have our own 'home,' until I was in high school, but left home when I was 17. My younger brother not only worked himself through medical school, became the mayor of his town, and now an elected official of this 'great' state of California. It's really awesome. c.i.

c.i.- That is what is so great about this country. No matter how humble the background, a person with drive and motivation can do wonderful things here!

cicerone, hearty congratulations and best wishes to your brother, and to you.

An amusing sidelight on California politics:

Many years ago, when computers were young, I lived in a small town in hills of the Southeast SF Bay Area. One election year, as a joke, a black Labrador Retriever named "Bo" was entered into the local Mayoral Contest by his human, a tavern owner. Bo not only triumphed, but was re-elected to a second term. Nattlly attired in a formal red bandana, Bo officiated at numerous parades and similar events, and was frequently seen visiting the business establishments of "his" town. Though far too mannered to insist or even request such, he was nonetheless quite willing to accept freely made offers of edible gratuities. His passing was greatly mourned and marked with somber ceremony.

Phoenix, Through my extensive travels and internet communications, many challenge us on the subject of "greatest country in the world." From personal observations, not only from family and friends accomplishments in the US from humble beginnings, but also from observing the difficulties many of the educated class have in other countries (both third world and developed countries), it amazes me how biased people can be about their own country. I'd bet my stake in the good ole USA, any old time. c.i.

timber, Often times, especially now, I wouldn't mind a dog on the ballot. I'd probably favor the dog over all the other human candidates. Wink c.i.
