Franken wants wars to be paid for

Quote:
Sen. Al Franken introduced legislation on Wednesday that would require Congress to pay for future wars and ensure that they do not add to the federal budget deficit. The Pay for War Resolution gives Congress the option to finance war through budget cuts, creating new revenue or a combination of both budgetary means. Franken said the bill is meant to avoid a repeat of the $1.25 trillion that the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan have added to the national debt.

“We have to ensure that Iraq and Afghanistan remain anomalies in American history,” Franken said on the Senate floor Wednesday. “And that’s what my resolution seeks to do. It will ensure that future wars don’t make our deficit and debt problem worse. It will ensure that Congress and American citizens must face the financial sacrifice of going to war. And it will force us to decide whether a war is worth that sacrifice.”

“In the last ten years our wars have been paid for by borrowing,” Franken said. “The Iraq War was accompanied by a massive tax cut. That failed fiscal experiment created the impression that war requires no financial sacrifice. We know that is just not true. The question is who will bear the financial sacrifice, the generation that has decided to go to war or its children and grandchildren?”

He said the bill was started months ago, before the U.S. action in Libya. “This did not start with Libya although Libya gives it a sense of urgency,” he said.

In a press release from Franken’s office, he notes that think tanks across the political spectrum, from the Cato Institute to the Center for American Progress support his war budgeting plan.

I wonder how the budget-conscious Republicans will respond.....

@DrewDad,
Interesting!

Good enough and smart enough I daresay. (Would have to look at it more closely to be certain...)

@DrewDad,
I tend to agree with him but I suspect it wouldn't fly since wars have oft seemed to start and progress in willynilly ways in the last bunch of years - but it is at least interesting to me. I think we need tightening up on declaring war instead of slipsliding into them, and concommittent budgeting to go along with that.

@DrewDad,
Stop dignifying these war crimes by calling them wars. They are nothing close to wars. They are armed and egregious aggressions against people who did nothing wrong.

A hero is someone who makes the common sense suggestion that the people who commit these war crimes of illegally invading sovereign nations, after lying to their citizens and the world, be held to account. Just like the US held Germany and Japan to account.

This is just more of that overwhelming American conceit. Who gives a **** how big your national debt is. You've killed hundreds of thousands of people. You've destroyed countless lives. You've destroyed two countries.

Jesus, for once, consider those that you have heap so much abuse on. You shouldn't be so worried about the "wars" being paid for; you should be worried about the criminals paying for the 'wars'.

@DrewDad,
And I thought it was because he parlayed a one gag stint on SNL into a seat in the Senate.

Actually not that bad of an idea except that there might be a problem with defining exactly what a war is, and constitional issues of Executive and Congressional powers.

I wonder if his legislation would cover kinetic military actions?

DAMN, good thing that was not in place earlier, because if it were all of Europe would be Nazi Germany right now, and we would be their bitch.

@hawkeye10,
Just how old are you hawk. there wasent any doubt we went to war in 1941 because we were attacked, not because our president wanted to show he had big balls but with someone elses ass on the line.
