On a sign in an American town PLATO, it reads:
CITY LIMIT
PLATO
POP. 74
What does POP mean there?

So there are only 74 men and women (including children) in the village?
Maybe it was an old photo.
Plato Township is one of sixteen townships in Kane County, Illinois, USA. As of the 2000 census, its population was 4,018
there are several towns in the area where I live with less than 100 people.

@oristarA,
That means that if you make a statistical distribution of the population of the United States, and then find the center based on population density, it will be at or near Plato, Illinois. It has nothing to do with the population of Plato itself.
