Translating the word "ludus"

In discussing this word with my student, the question was asked why a word would be used to mean both "school" and "game". I could only answer that one would need to look at the sentence and its context to decide which one worked best. However, that is not a very satisfactory answer. Anyone have anything more for me? Thanks so much!

@ossobuco,
We have many translation questions, and not all of them are about translating latin words.
I was asking so I could help you tag the thread.
